Desktop publishing -computer PC या laptop का इस्तेमाल कर documents, page layout या graphic को तैयार करने की प्रक्रिया को desktop publishing कहते है. कई बार desktop publishing word का इस्तेमाल computer व प्रिंटर से पेपर प्रिंटिंग कीये जाने की प्रक्रिया को बताने के लिए भी किया जाता है
या फिर कहे की Computer aided publishing या प्रिंटिंग को भी कई बार desktop publishing कहा दिया जाता है
शुरु वात में desktop publishing सिर्फ प्रिंटिंग की दुकानों तक ही सीमित था लेकिन आजकल freelancer graphic designer भी desktop publishing software जैसे adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, InDesign या adobe illustrator का इस्तेमाल कर Desktop publishing का काम कर रहे है. और desktop publishing सिर्फ प्रिंटिंग shops तक ही सीमित नहीं रहा गया है. इसका इस्तेमाल बहुत जगह और बहुत अलग-अलग industry से जुड़े लोगों द्वारा किया जाने लगा है

1980 के शुरू-शुरू में desktop publishing का इस्तेमाल सिर्फ printing industry में ही होता था. लेकिन आज desktop publishing का इस्तेमाल सिर्फ प्रिंटिंग industry तक ही सीमित नहीं रहा गया है. अब तो लगभग हर जगह जहां computer का इस्तेमाल होता है वहा किसी न किसी रूप में desktop publishing का इस्तेमाल होने लगा है.
फिर चाहे वो web design, graphic design हो या UX design या फिर आपको MS office की मदद से power point presentation बनानी हो या excel sheet.
आजकल हर ऑफिस में DTP या कहे desktop publishing software का इस्तेमाल जरूर होता है. Desktop publishing software की मदद से आप web design, UX design आदि भी कर सकते है. Desktop publishing का इस्तेमाल कहा होता है
Desktop publish software’s का इस्तेमाल printing, web design, app design industry और shops/offices में होता है. Desktop publishing (DTP) का इस्तेमाल करके कोई भी ये चीज़ें design कर सकता है
- Printing Banner design, broucher, flyers, posters design
- Branding- logo, Business card, letterhead design

- PowerPoint presentation, email newsletter design

- Web design – desktop publishing software की मदद से हम web के लिए graphics design कर सकते है. जैसे web banner, web page आदि
- Graphics and UX design – graphic design से हम branding कर सकते है किसी भी company या व्यक्ति के लिए. desktop publishing software के इस्तेमाल से किसी भी company की identity design कर सकते है जैसे logo, business card, letterhead, brochures, posters, newsletter आदि. वही UX design में हम किसी भी software या app के लिए graphical interface design कर सकते है

- एक graphic designer को typing आनी चाहिये और अगर वो freelancer की तरह काम करना चाहता है तो उसे CorelDRAW, adobe photoshop, adobe illustrator. Adobe InDesign आना चाहिये
- वैसे as beginner आप सिर्फ CorelDRAW और photoshop के साथ भी शुरु वात कर सकते है. भारत में लोकल printing press में यही दो software का इस्तेमाल अधिक होता है
- और अगर आप online freelancing करना चाहते है as a graphic designer तो आप adobe photoshop, adobe illustrator सीख कर शुरु वात कर सकते है. क्युकी online freelancing में ज्यादा काम आपको दूसरे देशों से मिलेगा जैसे की USA, Australia, Canada और वह CorelDRAW की अपेक्षा adobe illustrator का ज्यादा इस्तेमाल होता है. तो बेहतर होगा की आप adobe illustrator सीखे photoshop के साथ. CorelDRAW और adobe illustrator दोनों ही vector-based software है. और लगभग एक जैसा काम करने के लिए इस्तेमाल किये जाते है. जबकि photoshop image या bitmap editor है और ये photos edit या web graphic design करने के लिए ज्यादा इस्तेमाल किया जाता है
- तो अब बात करते है की graphic designer kaise bane DTP का course बहुत से computer institute करवाते है लेकिन वह पर आपको सिर्फ software ही सिखाया जायेगा. जबकि अच्छे graphic designer बनने के लिए थोड़ी बहुत art की समझ जैसे की colours theory की समझ होनी बहुत जरूरी है. - अगर आप बहुत ही high level के graphic designer बनाना चाहते है तो आप BFA join कर सकते है. BFA यानी bachelor of fine arts. जिससे की आपकी fine arts में समझ बढेगी और आप असली creator बन कर निकलेंगे न की सिर्फ एक computer operator जिसे graphic design software की knowledge है
- इसके अलावा आज के समय में बहुत से design colleges भी है जैसे national institute of design अहमदाबाद जहां से आप 4 years की B.Des in graphic design जैसी degree कर सकते है . इस तरह का course करके आप MNC जैसे amazon, Flipkart, OYO जैसी company में graphic designer की job पा सकते है और साथ ही time मिलने पर online freelancing भी कर सकते है
- वही अगर आप बस Microsoft office सीख कर page layout या simple excel या PowerPoint जैसे ऑफिस work तक सीमित DTP या computer operator बनना चाहते है तो आप कोई भी computer institute join कर सकते है उसके लिए fine arts की कोई खास जरूरत नहीं होती है

Desktop publishing के बहुत से फायदे है desktop publishing के आने के बाद design, printing व web industry पूरी तरह से बदल गयी है और इसमें 1980 के बाद लगातार improvement हो रही है. इसके आने से documents दिखने में पहले से बहुत ही बेहतर हो गए है. Productivity बढ़ी है, production cost reduce हुई है, graphics में visually बहुत सुधार हुआ है,
DTP software’s की मदद से आप graphic या document को आसानी से import करके art create कर सकते है, resize कर सकते है, DTP software’s की मदद से art को digitally draw कर सकते है
